Does anyone have any insight on searching near these wreck areas? Are metal detectors allowed in or around these sites? Has anyone had any expirence in this area of treasure hunting off the Keys?

If you have a permit to search and salvage  you can use a metal detector  ( a magnetometer is also a kind of metal detector ! ) . When you mention the keys you have to undersdtand that this is a vast area . The wrecks of the 1733 galleons are up and down these keys . Most have been salvaged and the remaining coins may be worthwile to look for .   Cornelius

Thanks for your quick response... I have been looking into moving to florida...retiring from the navy. Ireally love diving and am looking at wreck diving and intregued by the galleon wrecks. I have been doing a lot of research and understand that most of these wrecks have been salvaged. There is also many other galleons lost around the keys as well. I have been reviewing charts and studing these areas. I have many very old charts and maps I have studied. I know they are pipe dreams but... you never know. How hard is it getting salvage permits? Have you searched these areas or done any wreck treasure hunting?

Thanks,
Keith

Keith . I am an old pro in this business . To get a permit in Florida is next to impossible  . Maybe if you knew the right people that may help . The freedom to have a nice hobby and share the proceeds with the State is no longer an argument. You would think that the State and its archaeologists would favor divers that are helping them to discover lost wrecks , but hey .... forget it .   It is a shame !   Cornelius

Ksightler the area from Miami to Key West is the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. There is absolutely NO treasure hunting allowed and they (FKNMS) will NEVER issue a salvage permit to anyone. Cornelius is right, the state dept. of historic resources is trying to ban treasure hunting all over the state. There is very little left in the Keys anyway. The 1733 wrecks were first discovered by Art Mckee back in 1938. They have all been heavily salvaged over the years before the FKNMS banned it.

How do they regulate a diver from taking a metal detector out with them on a dive? There is a lot of area to enforce? What are the rules on using a metal detector in this regeon...?
Thanks
Keith

Keith as long as you can persuade the guys checking on you that you use the detector for fishing ( I take it you have a fishing license ) you may get away with it . If you don't use your detector for fishing you get the short end of the stick . ( you will lose your detector and will have to pay a substancial fine ) Have fun in our beautiful State of Florida . The land of the free . Well........free Huh???   Cornelius

Keith  do you have some Dutchmen in your family ?  I am sorry to tell you that to get a permit to dive / search / salvage  , you have to come from a famous family . The State of Florida does not look in favor of you . Too bad , but that is the way it is . I have to tell you though that Florida is a beautiful State  . It is wonderful to live there  . That State will have my heart anytime .  Cornelius

I also keep hearing about unknow galleon finds.. like the one between Lower Matecumbe and Long Key (Craig). Are these old reports?

Wife hails from Aruba... Studied In Den Haag, Nederlands... Nice place...

How far out does the refuge cover...? I know most of the wrecks are in less than 30 ft of water... but some sank deeper..
