This Iron Clad has been located. It is on the Mississippi River, on the Louisiana side. It is only 9 foot deep. It is in mud and should be well preserved. The problem is that part of lays under a levee. Core samples have been taken. It is +/- 200 yards from Boothville High School. No one from the State of Louisiana seems to want to get involved, even though money has been offered for as exploratory dig. That is a shame. Historic. Museum potential.Tourism. There are also 3 other steamboats in this area.Alot of paperwork would be involved in raising this.

Can you salvage it without damaging the levee? You may have some serious issues to deal with on this one, mate.

Is it at 9 feet below the water level or 9 feet into the mud? If the former, an excavation to open a dive portal into the hull would be safer for those protected by the levee but a bit more risky for divers. If the latter, a full excavation is probably the only option.

Lots to consider. Good luck. It would be great to see the story of your recovery and salvage in the news one day.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hello My Aussie Friend,
It is in the mud. The water is at its lowest point in 14+ months. That is why I hunt the river in the heat. There is no choice. The water can jump up with the next storm. Gold Digger you think like I do- this would be a fantastic oportunity-  I would love to see this happen- just don't know how to make it work

very interesting...although the words "Louisiana" and "levee's" brings bad thoughts to mind...

i wonder if steamboathunter(i think thats his sn) may have some words of wisdom or guidance....possibly even an interest, sounds like he may be tied up on another project at the moment....im in the Dallas area over here west of you, will see what i can find out on my end...

surely there has to be some historical committees there or something like that, who would have an interest!
out of curiosity have you thought to contact NUMA on this?

i would feel sure that they would be very interested in your info...

From the Numa web site

Her suspected hulk lies about half a mile above the Boothville high school on the southwest bank of the river. Note; the mag survey by Texas A & M shows her to be almost completely under the levee. It's best to look during low water. There is a flat reef-like barrier edged with a small rock breakwater that extends into the river from the base of the levee for about fifteen feet. If you can walk this area, you can easily detect her iron mass, but can only pick up a piece of her from a boat running parallel to the breakwater. She is buried nine feet under the mud and could be very well preserved.
