Flor do Mar , where did she go down

(1/7) > >>

Cornelius:
I have requested Christian to start this thread .  So.... where did the Flor do Mar sink ?  Marks pinpointed the wreck by looking at an old map . I had this map in my research papers for about 30 years . The point of it is that this was an old chart ,  drawn many many years after the Flor sank . The coastline of Sumatra was not accurate but was a rough drawing of what might be . So , pinpointing a wreck by looking at an old map is completely ludicrous . Marks  should have said  ,, somewhere here the Flor do Mar sank ,,  but he should never have said that he could pinpoint the wrecksite . So....if you can agree with me that this map is of no value  , where did the Flor sink ? The reason for this  sub-board is to find out everything there is to be known about the ill-fated  Flor do Mar . Let us start by giving your idea of what happened in 1511  .  Cornelius

Cornelius:
Well...I think I will reply to myself .  After raiding Malaca , Alfonso sailed away with his ship full of the richest prize ever loaded on a ship . He sailed North but was wrecked on the coast of ARU .  The survivors reached the river PACEM .  However  the river PACEM has nothing to do with the kingdom of Pacem which was further North and close to Achem . Marks took a map that placed the wreck at  Pacem because the map told him so , and because of the river named Pacem .  Marks made two big mistakes . The first was to trust an old map , and the second was to believe that the Pacem river was in the kingdom of Pacem . The result was that they missed the wrecksite of the Flor do Mar by a long shot . The true wrecksite is at a different spot ,  and I am close to finding that spot .   Cornelius

TonyWells:
Cornelius,
When you write 'Marks' did you mean to be writing 'Marx'? Its confusing. His correct name is Marx.. not Marks.
Cheers,
Tony

Cornelius:
Yes Tony ! I don't know how I could make that mistake . Having known the guy for many years I should not have made that mistake .  Thanks for correcting me ... Cornelius

Before I will go ahead with my story and disclose more of my findings , I like to know if there is any interest in this story . If not , let's forget about it and go ahead with our  Metal detectors  .  Cornelius

Cornelius:
Reading and having interest are two different things  !  I can do the research for myself   . It is my hobby  . There are a few people interested in the subject  and we exchange  personal E-Mails . I want to share my findings with the other people on this net .  But if there is no interest , so be it .  I will go my way without discussing this subject any more on this forum . the Cornelius

Christian:
Cornelius, I am very interested, too. Let's try to have your friends join the discussion. The Flor do Mar is a special topic. Researching it is probably above the possibilities of the ordinary hobbyist. Hence the number of people who can contribute to it is limited. The more valueable your contributions are.

Regards,

Christian

findoldstuff:
Hello all , so Cornelius would this info be incorrect by your research;
Flor do Mar, sunk in 1511 off Sumatra, Indonesia

In 1511 the Portuguese Viceroy Afonso de Albuquerque was sent to the strategic town of Malacca (in modern-day Malaysia) to claim it for Portugal, which he did; but on the return voyage to India, his ship Flor do Mar was wrecked in a storm, sending spoils from the victory (including a reported 60 tons of gold) to the seabed. Modern searches for the wreck (which sank to a depth of over 100 feet) have been unsuccessful, although Robert Marx claimed to have found some jade artifacts from it.
