The great Lakes are an incredibly dangerous series of waterways.
Combined with the hodgepodge of craft that were "thrown" out in the late 1800s til around 1940 or so, led to a LOT of wrecks.

Modern safety regulations and ship improvements helped, but it is STILL very dangerous.
