Is this the same wreck?

Flor De La Mar [+1512]

Lettens Jan01/01/2009

In December 1511, Captain Albuquerque, sails with three ships, the Flor de la Mar, the Trinidade (Capt Pero de Alpoym) and a third Junk from Malacca to Malabar.

Next to a very valuable cargo, the Flor de la Mar carried young ladies and women to be servants for Queen Maria and the Junk some 60 local Javanese carpenters.

While sailing, they capture in the first weeks of 1512 a fourth ship, off Gujarat, containing species and 30.000 cruzados.

Due to a navigation error at night, the Flor de la Mar gets grounded in January 1512 on a reef, near Ilha de Polvereira, off the coast of Sumatra and breaks in two pieces.

Most of the crew, including the Captain are rescued by the Trinidade, but the women and children on board the Flor de la Mar all left to die.

In the mean time, the Javanese prisoners on board the Junk, see their chances to escape and murder the Portuguese crew and get away with the ship and arrive in Pacem.

Albuquerque, continues his voyage with the Trinidade and arrives in Cochin, after capturing 2 other ships for their supplies.

The loss of the Flor de la Mar and the kunk was great, nearly all of the treasures captured in Malacca are lost and this shipwreck has ever since inspired many treasure hunters.

The cargo stated to be worth more than a billion pounds and to include beds, thrones, statues of elephants and tigers in solid gold.

The wreck has not been found yet.

I do not know how they can place a position on what has not been found..... strange!!

I think you misread him. He claims he has now found it. If he has, he surely would not reveal its location until he has salvaged it.

Do you mean that he did not find it before but that he has found it now ?  Let me tell you that Marx has not worked in Indonesia for quite a few years  . I know the area quite good . A magnetometer search will not do the job because of all the metal junk in the Strait of Malaca  .The wreck is most likely silted over and cannot be found by using a ROV . Besides the visability is downright bad in the area . So if the Flor do Mar is ever found it will be by accident . The local fishermen are ther best way of getting any information . Even if you have to check every possible site it will take you years of searching .  What gets me though is that a guy is trying to sell coins from the Flor do Mar but did not go after the fabulous rich cargo. Something is not cosher here .  Cornelius

Cornelius... I agree it is a bit fishy... I have had my travels throught the straits... and yes with the amount of traffic and trash you might have a point on detection... and visibilty is less than 15 FT on a good day...
