Hello All

I am a little surprised that it was not a project funded by the British Government?

i think i know where the coffin is in portabella panama off the coast. I am a third generation dowser that has been working for 3 partners in searchof  drake's landing spot for the past 2 years.  the 3 partners have been studying drake for over 10 years and they believe they have found drakes landing point in the san francisco bay.  drake left many treasures and artifacts behing at this point and i was contacted to dowse for the items from the mid 1500's -- so far we have pulled together a lot of facts that line up includeing having a gpr come in and verify my dowsing and it looks very positive.  I would like to speak with other drake enthusiasts about this.  If we are correct we will be changeing history.  I believe we may have found an anchor and a couple of cannons along with many other objects burried at sea and on land surrounding the area.  we are at the point now in stakeing a claim. so it would be nice to hear from some one of knowledge in this matter.

I don't know much about seafaring matters, but I am aware that for a seaman, being buried at sea was considered an honor.  As far as the use of lead coffins go, the primary use of them that I am aware of, in earlier times prior to and into the early 20th Century, was for preserving a body temporarily in order to get it to an established undertaker where it could be prepared for proper burial!   Teach

Back in the time, a sailor was lucky to be wrapped in a bit of sail cloth before being committed to the deep.

Do you really think they would have a lead coffin on hand?

Second thought.

They did use lead sheet to do emergency repairs to the ship some times.

Did they have it?

Gears still turning here.

Well think about who you are talking about, Drake wasn't just any old sailor, he was a very well to do guy and a legend in his own time.

Hardluck posted about the manifest showing lead sheeting and some being used for something. I'd guess in Drake's case they used lead to preserve the container as a sort of mausoleum at sea. It's either lead or gold if you want to keep corrosion from destroying it and I guess Drake didn't want to take his gold with him  Grin

I am very interested in Francis drake and john Hawkins.
Especially if they where not buried at sea, but hidden in a marked grave.
I once read they where buried within sight of the Spanish silver mines. any one heard this before.
