SS Central America Gold Hoard

(1/1)

panzerman:
It seems that more and more gold is being recovered from this wreck. I for one find it strange that the 1857-S Double Eagles are still commanding high prices in auctions. Thousands have been brought to market, most still are awaiting salvage. Does anyone know the exact number of 1857-S Double Eagles that where on the ship? I heard over 100K. One day the prices will plummet.

I heard there were just over 5,000 1857-S coins on board. The reason they are going for so much is the excellent condition of the coins. They were found in stacks so the coins in the middle had both sides protected.
