For those of you new to, or considering a side scan sonar, there are many options out there. The great thing about technology is that it is getting better and better and the price is getting better and better. I have been using sidescan for a few years now and thought I would add my 2 cents worth... there are companies offering towed sonars and hull mounted sonars. Both have their advantageous, but there is also a dis advantage to the hull mounted version that the new user should be aware of... although they are convenient and eliminate the need to reel them out and in and watch the bottom proximity, they are subject to distortion caused by wave action and pitching of the boat. The towed unit is much less affected by sea conditions as it is trailing behind the boat and the tether acts as a shock absorber, thus producing a much cleaner image. Just food for thought!
