Soon I have to have a defibrillator/pacemaker inserted into my heart/chest. Doesw anyone out there have one and does it interfere with metal detecting? You may contact me her or email me at merlsk@aol.com.
Thanks.

I think a lot is going to depend upon the make/model of pacemaker you have, how it is set up, and how powerful your detector is.   Definitely talk to your cardiologist (and if possible a manufacturer's rep....you'll want to take your detector specs with you).
My Dad has one.   He hasn't tried metal detecting since he got it, but reading the specs on his device, there's a good chance his detecting is either permanently eliminated or severely restricted unless he takes care not to get his chest too close to the coil while it is on.
Do NOT take chances with your health.   This is one of those things that you really do want to discuss in detail with the experts

I've had one for 5 years and my detecting has never interfered with it. It is RF read and programmed, but evidently the frequencies used are not close to the freqs of the detectors.......I am also an amateur radio operator & am constantly bombarded with RF.....and of course, we all use cell phones & other wireless devices.....personally, I'm unaffected....good luck with your procedure......Butch

That's good news.   I suspect most newer pacemakers will also not interfere with metal detecting, but still a good thing to check and make sure.

I'm sure the New Ones have that stuff covered.    They will tell you the limitations for sure.

Can people with defibrillators go near microwave ovens?

Yes. A number of years ago, when both ICDs and microwave ovens were made very differently, some ICDs reacted badly in the presence of old-style microwave ovens. As a result, ICDs were modified and are no longer affected by microwave ovens. This also is true for pacemakers. However, doctors advise ICD patients to avoid a few things, including:

•Very powerful magnets, such as those you might find in a junkyard to lift discarded automobiles or contained within the cases of powerful stereo speakers. Smaller, weaker magnets — like those used to hold notes on a refrigerator or those in telephone receivers — pose no difficulty.
•Very powerful electromagnetic fields generated by the equipment used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
•The electromagnetic field near an automobile ignition system.

The main concern is that a very strong electromagnetic field temporarily deactivates the ICD. This effect persists only as long as the patient is in the field, returning the ICD to full function as soon as you move away from the magnetism. However, your doctor doesn't want your device's operation suspended even briefly.

The hospital wants me to bring in the MD at the 30 day checkup, to test and check. So, I'll eventually know.

Thanks Butch. That's right from a man who should know and I'm feeling good about the future.
