Your profile picture must meet two criteria. First, it cannot be larger than 90 by 90 pixels. Second, it must be less than 50k in size.
In the downloads section, there is a free picture resizer that works under Windows and does not need to be installed. It runs from your desktop and when you're done, leaves nothing behind in memory at all.
