The inventory feature is tied to the store. It represents things you have for sale which are purchased with points you accumulate for posts. If you sell an item, you are supposed to get points which you can sell. Points are your gold amounts just under your profile picture.
The store has not been working for quite some time now and is on the list of things to fix on the forum. It is, unfortunately, a low priority compared to other more pressing features.
Long ago, when the store was functioning, people did use their points. Some got very angry over the fact that they never received their items which was down to the fact that the person who originally offered the item was no longer posting here or even logged in any more. Because of that, the store was turned off until a solution could be reached. Ideally, a single person would be in charge of the store and all items for sale would be sent to that person for shipping thus eliminating the possibility of an item no longer being available.
All this has been under discussion on the moderator boards for quite some time now. When it is resolved, you will be informed here.
