If we could get a corporate sponsor for the site, member rankings could be as per the sponsor's product lineup from their entry-level detector (to denote newbie members) to the flagship product (indicating the most experienced members).

The upside is some extra money to defray operational costs; the downside is that a bias towards the sponsor brand may be mistakenly perceived by visitors. S'just a thought.

Thats a good idea Hobbyist and Minelab is our sponsor right now but as you pointed out by using their name in our member rank would look bias.

First, there are four levels we want to define.

Level 1 is normally a beginner to the forums but not always a beginner to treasure hunting. Thus, skills at the hobby should not enter into the name.

Level 2 is a member who has made the effort to contribute. Sometimes it is just to get to the downloads area and other times the enthusiasm just has to kick in and have a hand.

Level 3 is someone who may or may not stay for the long haul. It's 50/50 at this level.

Level 4 is someone who has been here a long time and looks like a permanent member or at least one who enters into lots of discussions.

All levels should be represented by non-judgmental names. Thus, I suggest that we use the names of the most common things we find, such as coins but not the value. Since we have members from around the world, the denomination might not mean anything to them. I suggest we use the metals as levels.

Gold Member is not to be confused with Goldmember, the movie. The temptation of using platinum as one level is great but I suggest we avoid that. Believe it or not there are some people in this world who do not know that platinum has a higher value than gold. It's also very rare to find a platinum item.
