I have been given a Bount Hunter Fast Tracker; 10 years old and still in the original box unused along with the receipt for ?155. Are these any good?

I'm just starting out on metal detecting and propose to do some research over the next 3 months to find a suitable site to explore. Meanwhile I'll try out the BH over some nearby fields. There are no headphones; are these essential?

Any tips on using the BH would be welcome (I have the intruction manual).
Cheers!
Stuart

Welcome to Thunting.com, the best forum on the planet.

Headphones will help you a lot in isolating the sound from background noise. Even wind and the air can distort your signals so if you can get a pair of the large, comfy padded type, you'll be very happy.

I've always found Bounty Hunter machines to be a bit fragile but electronically excellent. Treat it with care and it will do you good service.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I have several BHers that work great. Most were bought at pawn shops or yard sales for pennies  on the dollar or got them in trades for other detectors.

Im also new to this great hobby and own 2 BHs. My first one was the BH Tracker IV and for my trip to Hawaii last summer, I purchased the BH Pioneer 505. Both detectors are great at finding all kind of stuff. I enjoyed using the Tracker IV for it is good at pinpointing. The Pioneer 505 is also an excellent machine and is very sensitive. No too great at pinpointing, but the all metal, no motion mode does the job. Yes, the headphones are needed for you don't want to leave the small gold items behind, do you? The BHs are at their best retrieving coins and silver items. I have not found any gold yet, but I recommend you to perform jewelry tests so that you learn the tones made by the machines. Ah, and don't do the tests inside the house! Finally, very important to read the manual first. Don't go out for the hunt without reviewing it first.

Thank you all for the sound advice; I'll get myself a pair of headphones and get out and test the BH.
Cheers!
Stuart
Just another thought. I don't want to spend a lot on headphones so any suggestions as to what specification I should look for or actual recommendation. Thanks!

Headphones come in different qualities, but indeed it all depends on your choice and needs. Check out the folowing link from Kellyco to pick and choose:

I got mine from them and they were included in the metal detector package I purchased. Have fun and happy hunting!
