Hi there,
I have been loking at the locators produced by Fitzgerald's that make some very interesting claims (3 mile detection radius, 20 - 50ft depth depending on soil conditions).  I am a total newbie and would like to know if it is worth while acquiring this kind of machine for treasure hunting.  You can find their products here:

Any thoughts?

Read the advertisement. What are they supposed to locate?

Well based on all the products they sell,  mostly gold and silver (possibly other metals as well).  Some locators will indicate underground caves as well.  This is what they say about the Mini Eliminator II:

"This versatile locator has been very popular for every type of Treasure Hunting. The variable frequency allows the operator many options. Whether searching for gold - silver - diamonds - currency or even meteorites, the MINI II will fit your needs!"

I am honestly quite astounded by the claims.

And so are we.   Caveat emptor, my friend, caveat emptor.

read the signature line on any post by seldom here at Thunting.com for advice on reading these claims.

Ask yourself this one question Ojoe. " If they work as advertised why would they be selling them and not out getting rich with them?

Good advice!

Out of insatiable curiosity I dug a little deeper (har har, what a pun) and found that Fitzgerald may not be as much of a scammer as these claims may make him seem.  Here is another advertisement for a similar device from a different company:

http://www.accuratelocators.com/accumeter.html
- they claim up to 35 000 squre feet coverage at a depth of up to 125ft and high degree of differentiation.

Also, it seems Fitzgerald has their own treasure hunting team (they make reference to it on their site), maybe they need cash flow to fund the treasure hunts!  Who knows.

Maybe Mr Fitzgerald is overselling it, but perhaps someone can elucidate how the technology behind it works?

So far we haven't found anyone that can elucidate it in a manner that allows for independent reproduction of the results using the scientific method.   There are believers and there are non-believers, just as there are believers and non-believers in dowsing.   My personal opinion is that if a person gets better results using these devices than they do with simple dowsing rods, it is because they believe they will get better results.

Thanks BA - just like me to find the fringe technology and discover the underlying debate.  It is a curious little habit of mine.

Perhaps I should take some time and see what I can discover about this technology and share it on the forum so that there is clarity for guys like me who get all excited, but unlike me spend to money before asking.

ojoe, you can start by going to the Home Page and scrolling down the LongRange/Black Box board (which is where this topic actually belongs...but I'm going to leave it here for now so others know where to find the ongoing debate/discussion).   There is  a lot there, including several posts by a manufacture of a Long Range Locator.    be warned, though, passions run high (as they do anytime you have a debate that involves believers and nonbelievers with few active participants in the middle)

Read what you just quoted. Does it actually say what it will locate? Does it state, specifically...that it will locate gold, silver or diamonds?
