Moderator's Note: This post and the two that immediately follow it were split from a Garret Scorpion Topic on the Garrett board that was originally posted in 2009.  The moderator is guilty of minor editing to improve the flow of the split topic.....BA

So what happened. Did anyone buy the Scorpion and did you find gold?

There are bad and good reviews on this detector. However, most are toward the bad. Why? Is it the ground balancing that people don't understand or is it the detector being inconsistant?

Compared to the more expensive Fisher Gold Bug 2, how to compare? There are a lot of good reviews for GB2, but that's another $300+tax dollars. Ouch! Might as well buy a $1000 detector then!

And I don't see many post on the Scorpion. Is this the sign of doom? Detecting

Guys, your information is great if you own one of the other detectors, but this actually posting is for the Scorpion. Please stick to discussing the Scorpion and post to other forum topics if discussing other brands.

It really annoying trying to find information on a subject and finding other information under the heading you want information on. thanks for understanding..... :Smiley

Hi Mindshare, yes the Scorpion is a wild piece of kit and it has made many a man rich
and made a few dreams come true, at times i wish i had the option to manualy ground balance like you can on the Scorpion,
But for some reason the market has gone away from this type of rotary knob way of ground balanceing, but i'm not sure if it is
a good thing, the rotary knob does allow for more precise adjustment.

Would you know if the price for the Scorpion has gone up or stayed the same? It's so old over 20 years I figure that it would be discounted a lot by now Undecided

They still make them Garrett does so price is at a standstill still high.I don't think the scorpion is as deep as the new fishers as I have used them all and have a gold bug at this time and a garrett freedom ace 3.The gold bug comes with a 5in head and a 11in as an accessory,so a little money their!! Like the gold bug for trash as the iron infested sites are no problem for it. jmho.

So would it be safe to assume that the Scorpion is good for 2-3 inches but buried pieces beyond that, it will not find?

The video for the Scorpion shows a relatively shallow area that he found the gold piece. Not sure video 1 or 2

mindshare the price is around $549.00 and i don't think it's gone up by much

But it has set a bench mark as in most gold / multi purpose machines seem to be around 15khz range it seems to

be the bases for most modern machines, I think it is a timeless setup as far as how much these machines have changed

thats a proven winner and the 5x10 coil is a must, and i don't think that it's worth paying over a 1000 dollars to try and find

anything better, when you can buy that machine and all the accessories and still have changr

Agreed, I am looking to buy the Scorpion eventhough everyone is telling me to buy an expensive $1000 machine. I like what I see and hear about the Scorpion so far. Now, if anyone is interested in buying my Crate DX212 guitar amp for $700 or best offer  :Smiley, I'll soon be an owner!!!  Kiss(changing hobbies!)

Mindshare that 2 -3" is on tiny pieces of gold on larger bits its gonna see em just as good as the next machine.

with the bigger coil it will go deeper and don't forget we dont pick where or how deep the targets are buried, thats just how it happens

in the videos, if it's there you've got as much chance as the next guy, as i've said before trust the machine,

and if it could'nt do it then they would'nt have kept making them for so long, they don't fix wot ain't broke Grin Grin Cheesy

As for spending more money don't, it's easy to tell some one to spend thousands of dollars but then you'll wonder around

trying to find what ever you looking for and thats soul distroying when you have over spent on ya budget,

start of with that machine of if you want a gold detector then Whites do one for $499.00, so there is loads of scope

for you ,and you have got to sell the farm to get into this hobby/ job,
