What digging tool I use depends on where I'm at. If I'm in someone's yard and don't want to be chased off or cursed out, I usually use a hand trowel or a knife and try to make the smallest hole I can--usually a three-sided plug so I can push plug back in hole after making recovery and tamp it down snugly. If I'm out in the woods or out in a field, I use a sharpshooter with about six inches of the end of the blade cut off and I sharpen the new edge on the shovel. I sharpen one side of the blade to effectively chop roots with. This sharpshooter is one sure-nuff good and easy digging tool. AND I ALWAYS COVER UP MY HOLES--- EVEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WOODS!    For water hunting, I use a long-handled stainless steel scoop that has a long bill on it for easily cutting into the bottom of sand or soil. For dry sand beach, I usually prefer a small built shovel and a hand-held sifting scoop. For the scoop, I make my own of PVC with a section of hardware cloth in back and bottom so sand and debris can sift through easier. Great Detecting
