Hello Spy,

I've had a Sunray Probe on my Minelab Explorer SE. It was quite good as the machine itself has a little weak pin pointing. Hence the aid of the proble was a great relief when searching for small objects. However it is unfortunately rater costy. Hence I would take a look at eBay as they frequently pop up tehre. If your machine has howevera good pin pointing capability you won't need one.

Regards,

Christian

A pinpointer/probe can be a very handy accessory to have wether it is a stand alone unit or an in line unit such as the Sun Ray line of pinpointers/Probes.  They can cut your recovery time down especially on very small items like Christian said.

I use a Sun Ray Invader DX-1 and it is in my opinion one of the best accessories that I have added to my arsenal of detecting gear.  It performs very well for me.  Like anything else though there are pros and cons to running a in line probe such as a Sun Ray.  Here are a few things to think about if you are thinking of adding one to your equipment.

Some pros and cons:

Pros:
*No need for extra batteries for your probe as it runs off the power of the detector.

*Can't lose it in the field as it is connected to your machine.

*You still maintain all discrimination, tone I.D. and other features of your detector while using a Sun Ray as it is like running a very small coil so target information still shows on screen while using the probe.

*A gair amount of depth with the Sun Ray line.  Keep in mind though that these are pinpointers/Probes and are designed for a specific purpose so even though the depth is quite good it's not going to give you more depth than a regular search coil or anything like that.  The depth is better than a lot of Pinpointers/Probes that I have had experience with.

*No "crosstalk" due to the fact that you have to toggle between probe and coil so when one is active the other is not.

*Handy for tight areas such as when trying to work around tree roots and other obstacles.

Possible cons:

*Cost.  As Christian had stated above they are considered by some to be rather costly.  I will admit that they are a little pricey but for me it was well worth it when you stop and think of the possiblity of scratching a valuable silver coin thus reducing it's value greatly.

*Additional weight.  Although these units do not weigh in at much at all it is still added weight that you are now swinging.  I think mine only weighs around 11 ounces or so and I do not notice a difference but some people do not like the extra weight it adds to the machine.

*Since these are in line probes they are designed for specific brands and models so if you reqularly use more than 1 particular machine you may also want a stand alone pinpointer/probe or you will have additional cost for in line probes for your other machines as most of them cannot be switched from one machine to another.

I was satisfied with the DX-1 that I use.  It has served me well and came in handy on more than a few occasions.  Even though it did cost a bit the cost was well worth it to me.  Ultimately the chice is yours as far as wether or not to purchase one.

Hope this helps and good luck in your choice.

If you have any other questions/concerns about these Pinpointers/Probes please feel free to contact me and I will do what I can to help answe any questions you may have.

Have used the sunray probe on a Minelab Sov.GT. It worked with out any problem. Dont get me wrong with these comments these are the only negatives i could find. I did not like the added weight. And it always had me pulling on my detector when on the ground digging. Otherwise it worked good.

 Hello and welcome!

Do you still know how much it weights? It looks like lightweight in the pictures I see.

Alain

I use a vibra probe and like it, but as it is the only probe I have used I have nothing to compare it to.

Hi Hoochie Papa;
I use a Garrett pin pointer. Had a Fisher probe, but after using the Garrett probe I got rid of the Fisher probe.
The Garrett, can not only be used as a pin pointer but also tells you if your signal is close to the surface or deeper. It has good depth, is not too awfully large, and can clearly be heard with your ear phones on. Can't say I've ever used one like you have, but for anyone that doesn't have a pin pointer I got a tip for ya BUY ONE!!, you'll wonder how you ever got by without one before then.
