	how to find arrowheads? « on: November 10, 2009, 08:06:14 am »

hey all! just wonderin if anyone had any good tips on lookin for arrowheads.. i know i saw something in this forum about it but forgot where.. i know this much- wait for a rain to wash the few layers of dirt away and when you walk the field look for flat stones sticking up outta the dirt, i think i read that its best to look near water or by a creek? is there anything else i need to know?.. thanks!

The sooner after the rain you hunt, the better. Otherwise you give the dust a chance to settle and coat the arrowheads. Also, if you have the light behind you, you'll increase the chances of catching a reflection (another advantage of hunting while the ground is still damp). Mostly it's training your eye and looking where you think Indians would have been most likely to have camped or hunted.

Best way we find them around here is just to get out and keep your eyes peeled to the ground. New Mexico is loaded with them but still hit and miss

FYI. A few things we find very helpful, especially if you're going to be walking the fields for any amount of time are:

1) have a leather pouch like carpenters use that attaches to your belt - Irwin makes a good size one with four pockets. You can put your finds in here rather than shoving them in your pocket - as some may be too big to fit or if you get lucky you may find too many to fit in your pockets.

2) Break the brush end off of an old broom (or use some other long thick stick, preferably somewhat pointed) to carry with you - it can save your back as you will see many BFR's and LFR's (which stands for "big f*****g" rocks and "little...."). Use the pointed end of the stick to move the rock or artifact so you can see which it is. If you bend over and pick up every might have been in a field, you will have one worn out back! Do not force any possible artifacts out of the dirt as you run the risk of damaging it.

3) Take a pocket knife, an old screw driver or even an old spoon to use if the soil is hardened around your find. This way you can dig it out carefully.

4) Always let someone know where you will be.

not to mention that with a nice long stout stick, you can turn the BFR and expose the hidden snake while (probably) remaining out of striking distance. Better to know a snake wants the prize too before you reach your hand somewhere you haven't given a good looksee at first.

It all starts by knowing where the Natives lived.

Here in New Mexico you can find traces of life any place there was water.

Even if the River is now Dry, they were all over the place here.

buddy of mine whos an arrow head nut told me if ya find one on the ground put it back,walk a few feet away and come back to it,it kind of trains the eye for them

Here ya just look for something different. Scan the ground with a slow walk and anything different is checked out.
