Metal detecting is known to most people. But it’s not extensively applied in school actually.
In my humble opinion, metal detecting can be applied to history and science lessons.

Interesting thought...

In my opinion, I don't think it's a necessity ... but I do think it could be used a elective, like PE or Art class. (you get exercise, you learn about your finds, you learn delayed gratification, and most importantly you get away from boring school classes and mind numming video games. :)

It's a rarified interest. One of my children was very keen to go out with me and I always thought he'd be a lifetime treasure hunter. As an adult, 50 years old, he has had no interest since he began his family. I suspect his interest was mostly doing something with me when he was a youngster.

Having it in school as an elective would probably not draw many. But if the bug bites, wow. We're hooked for life.

This could also be easily said for ham radio as well. Certainly an option for Junior High school students and/or High School.

For probably 80% or more of detector users, this is a hobby, not a career or profession. There may be room for a detector club at a school but asking children's parents to fork over hundreds of dollars for equipment for a formal class is a bit much.

I say it is better off as an after school club if there is any interest.
