Have learned many good things about Tesoro, thinking switch to Tesoro.  I like to have one with VID, it narrow down to Cortes and Deleon.  Does it worth to spend $200 more for Cortes?   I mostly detecting in the park, and I live near the ocean, so will do little bit on the wet sand beach.  Any suggestion will help.  Thank you.

metalhead ,

Here is my "two cents" : The Deleon is a great turn on and go coin shooter. It does not have manual ground balance like the Cortes, but if you are in light to moderate soil conditions you will get good depth. The Cortes has the same detection circuitry as the Deleon, but the Notch feature ,the Sum mode (with tone ID), nine segment bar graph, and manual G.B. I think are well worth the extra $s. You will hear on the forums etc. that the sum mode has little use. don't believe it! Once you understand what it's telling you, it's terrific. Some users don't take the time to learn how to use it. You mentioned wet salt sand beaches. That is a no go with both models. Wet salt sand hunting requires salt GB mode on a VLF detector or you must use a pulse induction detector. If you have any other questions ask me here, PM me or call my business cell @ Snow's Metal Detectors, (860)488-5694.

i've heard a lot of good about the tesoro machines. the vaquero gets a lot of good reviews too besides the 2 models you mentioned.

the one thing all three are not good for is the beach. although they are excellent land machines. if beach hunting will be 50% or more of you searching you might want to look at some of the minelab models, some fishers, some white's models also are pretty good on the beach. and then you have to decide if you'll be hunting in the surf or just wet sand and dry upper beach. if you want to be in the surf you will have to have a waterproof control box. its a lot to research but first you have to decide if the detecting will be 50/50 land sites and beach sites or just occasional beach and in or out of the surf. sounds like you'll be doing primarily beach hunting with some land hunting?

Joe,

Thanks for the advise, one more thing wants to ask you, in the specification it said it requires 8AA alkaline battery, can it replaced by NHIM rechargeable battery?  Metalhead.

Scexplorer,

I mostly detecting in the park, once a while will walk to the beach wet sand area.  If the manual GB in Cortes would do,  I'm satisfy. Thanks, Metalhead

Not a good idea. NimH's have less voltage.    Joe

Rule of thumb---always use the batteries specified by the manufacturer.

Scexplorer : "maybe you want to research the vaquero too."
For Vaquero, the only concern for me is I don't know how I can see the depth, that means I have to dig until I find the target, how about if it is more than a foot deep, not sure I can do that.  Appreciated if you can share some tips on it.  Thanks again.  Metalhead.

metalhead,

i don't own the vaquero but the reviews are very good. as far as depth. while it is a good idea to know the depth, it really isn't that important to me. in order for a target to accurately give a depth at the depth you mentioned-12"- it would have to be a large target. if you learn to pinpoint correctly, and really get to know your machine and the difference in good and bad targets by audio signal, depth doesn't matter. one of my main machines, does not have a meter at all, i have no idea how deep the target is but can tell by the audio signal. the real faint targets are the deep targets. i'm not sure if the vaquero has a threshold. if it does, just a waver in the threshold signal can indicate a very deep target. depth meters on some detectors can be very inaccurate. whichever machine you go with, remember practice makes perfect. start with presets first few times out, then start experimenting a little with everything else, like discrimination but don't over discriminate if possible once you start learning the machine. the forum is an excellent place to get machine specific advise on whatever machine you pick. ask tesoro users on the tesoro forum if they like the vaquero. just let them know what type of hunting you plan on doing.
