Go Up Go Down

Hey guys,

Hope everyone has had a great summer of detecting and sniping up some good finds..

Couple questions, I grabbed up my first Tesoro machine off of ebay yesterday, Tesoro Lobo. I believe it is an older machine
but it seemed to be in excellent shape and came with 2 coils, both widescan in 10.5x5 and 15.5x8, got tit for $216.

Wanted to get some opinions as to:
1) how good this machine is?
2) how good the coils that come with it are?
3) how the tuning of this machine is as far as nugget hunting goes.

Since I live in gold country, obviously its use will be nugget hunting or gold detecting. I have heard nothing but
good about all of the Tesoro machines and I always wanted one of the lobo's and this seemed to be a good deal with the 2 coils
so I sniped it up.

Any and all opinions are welcome and important to me so fire away, I appreciate your time and experience in answering these
questions that have probably been asked many times over, I just couldn't find them..

I don't have it in hand yet but maybe by end of next week. Pics attached of the unit I purchased.

Thanks,
Geo
(still not able to swing my detectors yet, shoulder is still a mess, but soon.. Smiley

Lobo is supposed to be good on gold. I have a Tesoro Vaquero, and I love it. My main machine. The only thing that could make me try something else is the Lobo. Just remember the main thing here. A detector is only as good as the operator. Learn that machine inside out, and you will be the master Wise

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

I can tell you that the LOBO is supposed to be a very decent machine for prospecting, relic hunting, and even coin hunting. I was thinking of buying one from my treasure hunting buddy and didn't and now I think it might have been a mistake. That higher frequency is good for gold and brass and I've read many accounts of hunts that folks went on and done nicely using them. I have always liked Tesoro detectors and have owned probably a dozen Tesoro units and plan on buying another one sometime coming up. My detecting buddy is like me and we've both tried many different detectors and whenever we've gotten rid of detectors, many times it wasn't due to any problems with the detectors---I guess you could call it  TRY A NEW DETECTOR ITIS---HA!

Hi Geo,   The Diablo came out in 1988, the Original Lobo in 1989, Diablo II in 1991, and the Lobo Supertraq in 1997. These are all the units that Tesoro has produced for the gold nugget hunters.  I have only had the pleasure of using the Diablo II and Lobo ST.  I believe the Original Lobo was very comparable to the Diablo II in performance with the exceptions of the former being able to set discrimination and the latter with a 10 turn ground balance. The Diablo II was no depth monster (4-5 inches) but set up right with the 5X10 coil would signal almost as deep as my Whites Goldmaster II on targets of more than 8 grains (gold, lead). Better depth performance was achieved with the small concentric elliptical sniper coil. Having no discrimination on the Diablo II was a PITA. The Lobo has this option which allows you to utilize the 8X15 coil in a bit more trashy area, nulling out iron and still covering a large field of target area. Set the discrimination up to just barely a flinch on iron, then run the machine in all metal, when you hit a target, switch back to discriminate to check for iron ID or not. This said, now the main trash targets which you will have to dig will be aluminum.

One more bit of advice. Get a set of headphones with 150 ohms impedance. Signals come through much clearer.

Another good reason for headphones is that battery drain is less.

Here is something I got off from the Tesoro Website for choosing a detector for what type of detecting you want to do.

COIN             Deleon  - Cortez

RELIC            Tejon

ALL TERRAIN  Vaquero, Cibola, Umax II, Compadre, Silver Umax

PROSPECT      Lobo, Lobo SuperTrac

WATER           Tiger Shark, Sand Shark

Hope this helps someone.

Dusty Carl
