it may be better to dedicate an older pc laptop to digital oscilloscope status....they can be then coupled or made dual purpose by loading a spectruma nalyzer program, and you will have a few hundred dollars in equipment that used to cost ten grand or more...and the DOS (digital oscilloscope) is more versatile and powerful and sensitive than anything else on the market...by custom making your probes you can sense all kinds of wireless energies too....b

Thanks for the link Eugene52
I had a look at those kits a while back but wasnt sure if they were anygood. I havent got a osciloscope at the moment but didnt want to spend hundreds of pounds on one. Will they do the job like a normal osciloscope would ?

Thanks

They are limited in use being single channel. You cannot synchronize on one channel and view another, which is essential in MD design or troubleshooting work.

As Bill says today, look for the free dual channel scope software with spectrum analyzer that uses your PC's sound card. It works up to 50khz and costs nothing more than the price of an isolation probe. Here's one for under $10.00 including postage:

I order from these guys to the tune of hundreds of dollars per month and have nothing but good to say about them.

Still would be nice for when I'm doing field tests on my MD I could tune it right there and then instead of having to come home all the time to see whats happening not to mention that out in the field I don't have any metals and electrical disturbances to deal with.

GD thanks for that link....as well, ebay has many types of DOS (digital oscilloscopes) all the time...and spectrum analyzers now come standard with many music programs, a good free music program to check out is Audacity, from sourceforge.net I think it is...there may be some reverse engineering or compilation necessary, but there is some real powerful stuff out there for the taking.  I myself am just getting familiar with some of this stuff, but knowing it exists is more than half the job....for instance, I recently added GIMP to my computer, its an image manipulation program, super powerful, excellent for all image manipulation, lunar, terrestrial, etc, and totally free, blows photo shop away...it pays to look around...if you look into improvised counter surveillance techniques and equipment, you will learn about many types of custom probes as well, many technology companies use wireless sensing equipment, field measurement and all that, you never know what you will see when you start doing things like that....best of luck....b

With some of the very tiny things you are watching for in your detector, the pixels would mask them. It's a good quick and dirty but there is no resolution at all, Xavier. Look up the spec on the display and see what I mean. You'd be looking at a 1mhz signal and missing any spikes smaller than 1ms. A waste of time.

Ho yes I see what you mean so I guess that I will have to go with my first idea and that is to get a laptop. Like Billder said GIMP is a great program I have it now for about six month on my Linux (very complex bit of soft) I also use Zeitnitz scope on windows and DesignSpark all are free the only thing is that I have to reboot and use windows to run them. They will be bringing out a version of DesignSpark for linux soon but I will still need Windows to run my simulations program.

Regards Xavier

Hi Gautenglion

Just one thing to remember the better the sound card the better the software will work.
