Love the replicators on Star Trek? Wish you had one? Just around the corner, the reality is this:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZboxMsSz5Aw" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZboxMsSz5Aw</a>

Just watch it and get warm all over. For the real geeks here only.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Saw a similar video some time ago where Jay Leno needed a casting to make a gear for one of his old cars.  They did the video scans from 2 dimensions. and poof. Out of the machine came a perfect gear ready to make a casting for a new brass gear!

Bet the "ink" isn't cheap!! Grin

Surprisingly the ink+tool time is cheaper than machining metal+tool time for a simple part and gets better as the part gets more complex. The material  properties  of the "ink" are also surprisingly tough.
