Hi Y'all!

Can anyone recommend any good sites in southeast texas. Maybe battle sites, historical markers, etc....

I sure would appreciate any info that you can provide. I only moved to Texas 2 years ago so I do not have the first clue where to go other than Galveston Beach.

Thanks a bunch Shame

I was thinking that ANYWHERE along the Gulf Coast would be good cause of Hurricane Ike. So, I am heading down to Galveston/Bolivar on Saturday! YAY! At the very least, there should be some drunks that will lose their stuff! LOL LOL

Thanks for the tip! Great

and if you want to go further south, just out side of Brownsville- between Brownsville and South Padre Island is a battlefield that the last battle of the Civil was was fought- a month after the war had ended. Look Up Palo Alto battle field....

I don't know about finding old stuff in Galveston. After the big hurricane in the early 1900's, I think the city hauled in alot of soil to build the island back up. I have read an article somewhere, maybe in the Houston Chronicle, that talked about enough soil was shipped in, that they filled in the ground floor of the older buildings that were still standing.

Bill, better not tell Seldom that there isn't anything old to find in Galveston (although he does do a lot of his hunting off island).   It's a matter of knowing where to look (and some times when to look there).

Yeah the grade raising. Sand was dredged in from offshore to a depth of 4 too 6 feet. It only involved  a small percent of the Island on the east end which was the center of town then. It did not effect the ghost towns on the west end are any of the civil war forts or out post, The race track that was popular in the late 1800 was unaffected in fact I will have to look it up but only about 12% of the island was raised so there is still plenty to look for
