more than likely because that is where WC Jameson said it is or was...

the Trinity does like to flood, or did, but is also pretty deep.  i could imagine that new creeks could form out of it over time, and shift, but i dont think the main course of the river itself would change just a whole lot

good luck in your research and search!

It's surprising how much some rivers can change course.  I know the Red, Missouri, and Mississippi all have had major course shifts, at least over small areas......and that's an important key to keep in mind---there can can be substantial changes in the course of a river in one area without having a major impact on the over all course of the river.   I've seen that with both the Rio Grande in New Mexico and with the Colorado along the Arizona-California border.  (When Lt. Beale was blazing his wagon road to California, he camped on the east bank of the Colorado river one day and the west bank the next and took precise latitude and longitude measurements of his camps.  Both camps are well east of the present course of the river.  But the overall course of the river hasn't changed much).     This is one of those areas where using old maps and survey records can really come in handy.

I wonder if the church would mind you bringing a deep seeking metal detector to their graveyard, lol.

Graveyards are not likely to be built on flood plains for obvious reasons. Anywhere on a flood plain is subject to becoming the next new bend in the river at any time.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
