Close but no cigar, he did however become a recipient of state housing  Grin

If anyone lives close to the museum looks like they have a few maps on display.

I'll leave it to those who are really interested in the Lost Dutchman and the Peralta Grant to sift fact from fiction...but I do think those who want to believe should seriously consider the ramifications of the known fraud associated with the Peralta Grant.

Good point BA

Like Jones said it along with lots of other mines were work by big company's over the years. Don't think we will go looking for it just want to put facts to some legends. And it is always interesting to study the history of the hunt, and in this case the fraud. Wasn't there a book about the fraud back in the 1980's that was popular. Now I got to go read up on the con one more interesting sidebar to the story.

Here is a little about the solders

Seldom, there have been a few books about the land swindle.   There has even been at least one movie about it, The Baron Of Arizona, starring Vincent Price and directed by Samuel Fuller.   The movie came out in 1950

Did not see the movie. The book I am thinking of was "The King Arizona" or maybe the The Baron Of Arizona,
I might still have it, will look in a while it's been years since I read it.

While I didn't run them down to be positive, apparently Waltzer left a trail of documents including a citizenship request and a census. This is alluded to in the above link. From this source it sounds like much of the sensationalism for the mine came from Ms Thomas. Wonder if there were ever any assay reports attributed to Waltzer? I need to look at a detailed map of that area just to get a feel for the lay of things.

Idaho, one of the prevailing theories is that Walzer was actually recovering gold that he had high-graded from the Vulture mine when he worked there.   I'd tend to lean toward that particular theory if it weren't for the fact that the Vulture mine is a bit over 100 miles from the Superstitions.  That seems to present some serious logistical problems, at terms of the transportation available to him.

Has anyone ever added up how much gold old Dutch actually cashed in. The Vulture mine theory is a very popular one but I agree with BA logistical problems seems to be a against it. For now I am still holding to the theory that he found a cache and got into it as needed.

There is a sworn statement for citizenship by Waltz date July 19,1861 were he states he had been in California for 1 year and the US for 5 years. It's on record In Los Angeles.

Just from my own experience I would say 100 miles in that country is a long dang way to carry much gold considering you also need food and water for yourself and mules. People did make some incredible journeys in those days though I tend to agree on the cache theory more at this point.

I found a couple newspaper articals that were interesting but I cant save them in readable format here. Both from people claiming to find the mine. Just more names to chase.

Of course, there is always the possibility that the Dutchman high graded ore from the Vulture and cached it somewhere between the Vulture and Phoenix.   He may have even moved his cache closer into the Phoenix area as he got older and moved further east.   Then during the time he was supposedly working the mine in the Superstitions, he could have simply headed that direction long enough to get people thinking he was headed there, but instead he would double back to the cache of gold he had stolen from the Vulture years earlier.

Like I said, it's possible, but it's even more likely that he found either a good pocket of nuggets or a cache from someone elses mine (or highgrading) and retrieved gold as he needed it.   The ultimate source of that gold (and the cache itself, if he didn't empty it) MIGHT be in the Superstitions, or it might be in one of the ranges between Apache Junction and the Bradshaws with the Superstitions once again just being a diversion.
