I learned to really examine any jewelry I find right there on the spot. I always check for missing stones, because if I don't really look at it until you get home, I've missed the opportunity to find the stone. If I'm still out in the field, I can sieve through the dirt/sand in the spot where you found the ring or whatever very carefully. I always bring plastic bags, so if I don't find the stone, I'll dig out a bunch of dirt from the hole and take it home with me and search through it VERY CAREFULLY at home! Everytime I see a ring with a big empty setting, I know that stone probably popped out right there in the hole, because it's pretty unlikely that anyone was wearing a ring with an empty setting the day they lost it! Don't let those jewels get away!!!
