Go Up Go Down

I've got to say that I haven't been active in Metal Detecting as of recently.  I've had my GTP 1350 for almost three years now.  The only worth while discovery was the 1856 Braided Hair large cent in one of my fields two years ago.  It was valued at $10 because of its condition related to being in the ground for over 150 years.  I've got a line of questions that I hope to clear up.

1. I don't fully trust my metal detector.  I went out today and it beeped on a item in the ground steadily and trustfully.  The icon indicator even stayed solid on $1 coin.  Well, it was a rusty old nail.  I may not fully understand my GTP, but I'm thinking about getting a 4.5" Crossfire coil spring.  I've had a fair share of digging up hundreds of nails and rusty metal slabs for the past three years.  I think its kind of ridiculous for a $600+ machine.

2. The disc (Which ever the name of the round egg-shaped disc) is scratched up badly and even cracked and chipped and with dents.  I'm not certain if that effects the performance or not, but I'd like to know so I could get a new one and start heading in the right direction.

3. I would appreciate any helpful tips and information for a better path of treasure hunting.  Even though it is fun to dig into the ground, knowing that you found something.  Nails and metal slabs do start to get a bit irritating, comparing to this expensive machine.

4. I live out in the middle of nowhere rural area.  My favorite spot is out in a field, where a cabin used to stand around the mid-1850's.  It has shown its fair share of worthless metal slabs and nails, but has also produced some interesting finds as well.  Though, a better understanding of my metal detector and what I need.  Would greatly help me out.

I do realize that the machine isn't flawless and will accurately find what I want.  But as many things as I have found, and wasted time digging has started to take a toll equal to the machines value.  But I just don't trust it at all, it never seems to be able to be accurate at all.  I've tested it and threw down a dime and quarter and such, and it tells me accurately.  But, when I go to my spot its the opposite.  I plan to go to a fairgrounds tomorrow, which I hope will be a different story.

Any information or tips will be greatly appreciated.  If anyone knows a link to a good website or such about information pertaining to the GTP 1350 and/or helpful tips, go ahead and post her away.  Thanks again, for any tips and information given.

Wow...
Are you saying that the search coil on your detector is cracked dented and chipped?
If that's the case and it's that bad it could well be affecting things.
Any chance you could post a photo of the damage?

Sure, I'll get a pic of it real soon here.  I'm not sure if its the coil, what ever the disc shaped object that you sweep the ground with is called.

Here is four pictures, some of them are not good quality, sorry about that.  But here they are.

The first two are the crack and the chip.  The third one is the dent and the fourth one is just a overall look of the coil thing, which is all scratched up.

Hi,
Although I've seen worse the crack is a bit of a concern.
Hopefully no water has got in there!
You might think about sorting the crack with maybe fibreglass.
The scratches aren't too much to worry about.
It would be a good idea to take it to a dealer and try it with a different coil.

Unfortunately, the possibility of water getting in it probably would be high.  Its had it awhile and I've taken it in the rain before, like yesterday.  I was going to buy a 4.5" Crossfire coil beforehand anyways for the area I hunt in.  I'll try it out with some at a dealers if I can anytime soon.  Thanks for the advice. Smiley
