I have been doing some research on a couple of cache leads and have come to the point where I need to locate an old property.  Does anyone have any experience to lend?  I know the county keeps tax and land ownership records.  What dept. or office ( our gov. is so simple and logical..not!) do I start my search in?   If I have a name from 50 or 90 yrs ago can I trace what land they owned at that time, and who owns the land now?
Appreciate any advice.

If you want to know who owns it now just take the address to the tax office and do a trace. 50 years ago the county clerk in most states have that info but they may have turned them over to the historical society or the archives of the public library or collage.

Even if they've turned them over, they'll still be able to tell you where they are now (and they may have kept copies on microfiche or microfilm).  You'll probably be working with the either the County Clerks office or the County Tax Assessors office (maybe both).  By the way, you may want to try do some of the checking on line before you go down there.  You'd be surprised how much information you can get with an address and/or a legal description.

appreciate the advice.  The problem is that I don't have an address or legal description.  All I have is the name and the general area.

Find were the old records are and as BA said if your lucky they will be on microfilm. Go through them till you find the name/ name's you are looking for. One problem you may run into is that lots of times the records were not updated, when property changed hands. I run into a case a few years ago where the dad split 160 acres with his 3 sons years later one of the sons sold his to a guy with a hand shake agreement who later split it up and sold it off under land contracts, that changed hand several times.
Some county's have a search able data base that may let you search for property owned by Mr. X

like seldom says, i have gone back and done a deed  search, which will at the very least come up with a document number, if not a plat map, with some sort of address.

this can be done online, depending on what the county has..even if you just get the doc #, it will all be on the document, which you should be able to get from the county records, in hardcopy or microfilm form.

good luck!

Not sure where your at but try an online search for the county's name plus county appraisal district if its online for that area you can search by address, plat number, or name.
