I want to find old Iron fasteners from wrecks in the Mobile Bay, what would be an inexpensive way to do this? I want to make a recovery rig ( this I have figured out)

I am new to this process, so I want to find old Iron fasteners from wooden ships wrecked in Mobile bay and recover for salvage I am looking for an inexpensive way to locate these needs of iron in shallow water  , can I take a cheep metal locater apart and make a totable bottom locater , can I make a magnetometer out of two electric compasses ? any Ideas?
