I've been wondering about hooking up the detector to the back of a mountain bike somehow to ride along old railroad track areas.  Just a thought, has anyone tried this?

Having ridden a mountain bike off road quite a bit in my younger days, I would not even consider packing one. It would get hung on every branch, twig and piece of vegetation you went past. The chance of damage is approaching 100%. If you can fit it completely into a backpack, go for it. Otherwise, give it a "low pressure" test run one day and see what I mean. I snapped a very high cost fly rod one day on a bike.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Other than dealing with length of a detector and securing it solidly, I'd be concerned with vibrations loosening connections whether solder pads or wires. If it was strapped to your body, that would act as a shock absorber.
