Most mid and large sized cities have a historical society with a great deal of information for the local treasure hunter. Rather then seek out the well known treasures we all read about- it makes more sense to do research  and find treasure leads just from reading all about the people, events and other things in your area. You'd be surprised what you can come up with. The more successful treasure hunters are the ones that do the most research. Think about how many hours Mel Fisher and all the other famous treasure hunters spent just doing research before they even went out in the field. The same applies to the weekend treasure hunter. Research-research- research !!!!! It does pay off.

More to follow.

Steve

Years ago I visited a local HS and was browsing through the map section when I noticed a map which included a park which I had not known about. It was only about 4 acres but they had an annual carnival in one section of it. I found that most of it had been built over but detected a portion of the area where the carnival had been and found some really nice old coins and tokens from that era. Apparently I was not the first person to detect it but I had I not visited the HS- I would not have even known about it in the first place.

Here's a secret of mine. I like to visit nursing homes especially around the holidays. I.E. Christmas, Thanksgiving. I bring a notebook and pen and I usually ask people at the desk if I can talk to some people who don't get many visitors about there past. I ask questions like were they grew up and what they like to do on the weekends and were they used to go. You would be surprised on the knowledge and wealth of information they like to give. They even invite there friends there in the conversations. It makes me feel good to bring back great memories for them and help them remember the good old days. The Holidays are a terrible time to be alone. I would hope that someone you know, might get a visit from someone who cares. We all get old thats a fact. Unless the inevitable happens. Stop by and visit someone you know at a nursing home , a neighbor house, or someone who lives alone. who knows, you might make some new friends.

Tom

Hello Tom,

first of all welcome at THunting.com!

I would like to compliment you on this great social work that you are comitting to eldery people. I am sure these people are very gratefull for it and a lonely personw ill probably appreciate more than words can tell.

While I would usually say this phrase connected to finds, please let me say: Keep up the good work! Maybe someone will eventually give a clue to a lost cahce one day in exchange for your social commitment.

Best wishes & take care,

Christian

Welcome to the forum.  You're right about getting the older people to talk.  Tey are usually happy to have the company and enjoy going over the good ol days with you.  The information they hold can be priceless.  I have had many tell me things that I wouldn't have found out about any other way.

Just a note to those visiting the Historical Society.  Do not let them know that you a a metal dector or that your hunting for treasure.  I had a lady FREAK on me one time.  Just go in and let them think you are doing research on a leg of your family tree or one of your kids  or grandkids school papers.  Some of the volunteers at the Historical Societies can be a bit extreem.  Shawn
