How do I determine if a 1943 penny was made out of copper? Is the magnet trick good enough to determine that it's not copper?

Copper is not magnetic so the answer is yes to that second question but the first is harder to answer. There are some unscrupulous people out there how have taken the 1948 penny and ground it to look like a 1943 so one must be careful when finding one. Only a reputable coin dealer should evaluate the find not the finder. Unless you happen to be a coin expert as well. Judging by your questions I would think you are not.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Thanks for the info.  I know someone who has one but it sticks to a magnet. Must not be authentic. I'll tell him to take it to a expert.

As GoldDigger1950 has mentioned, copper is not magnetic.  The layer metal may be copper, or even toned to the color of copper.  It is probably a steel cent that had attained the color of copper or even had a layer of it put on it, to make it look like a copper '43.  But, I would still get it appraised.
