Go Up Go Down

My friend Jim Lyons wrote a short book many years ago titled, "How to Find Buried Treasure."  I doubt if anyone could find a copy now.  However, the main thrust of the book was that a TH'er should sift through old newspapers to find leads.  Then do follow up with probate records, maps or whatever to find more details if need be.  Most libraries have old papers on microfilm or some such record. I prefer the actual newspaper if possible as they are  much easier to deal with than a screen.
The other day I was at San Jose State University trying to find some information in old historic journals.  Before I left I talked to the librarian who told me they have reading machines for newspapers that are equipped so that if you find  something you like in the paper you can email the information to yourself. Free!  That sounds so awesome.  At the University of California  I paid a quarter or twenty cents a page for a rickity old reader that creaked and growned when it printed a fuzzy picture.

You can find lots of information in those old papers.  I used to spend hours at my local library just going through those old papers.

Years ago there was some guy (can't remember his name) who claimed he could go into any large town - do research in the cities library and within a couple months start finding caches of various sorts.
I think he may have put out a small pamphlet at one time on how he did it. If everything he claimed was true- it must have taken years and years to come up with that system

I love reading old newspapers, and it is certainly true that they can provide some very interesting leads.

Here is an article about a shipwreck or boat burial that seems to have been completely forgotton by historians that I found a few years ago:

An article about the discovery of a brooch that may have belonged to William Shakespeare:

An article about a roman Altar (although more likely a tombstone):

An article on the pirate blackbeard from 1827:

And loads of others that I haven't put online yet.

Old news papers are an incredibly under rated resource, get down to your local reference library and start searching!

I would check if they have a lost & found section and that may help lead to the good stuff
