Goldfinger: Thank you for responding. That is what I have been doing in the past. I was just curious what was standard.

Most of the time - property owners have no objection to you keeping whatever you find. If the owner is acting "odd" beforehand- beware.

So what did the historical society have to say?

I don't get to formal when detecting someones yard.  I think if you show them these type of forms you might  scare them into saying no.  I also carry some old dug wheats with me.  I can show them to the owner and if he decides he wants what you find, you are not out much.  I also ask them if they lost any jewelry or items in the yard.  I tell them I will do my best to find it for them.

To anyone; I have not tried to get permission to search someones yard. How is this generally received by the home owner?

THAT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME to answer,as everyone has their own amount of insecurities.

i would try staggering the boundry lines,if one may be more friendly than another.

some one said "it's always easier to get forgiveness than permission"

thats sort of how i operate.seems like the red flags will go up in my head when i'm pushin too hard.

a nasty property owner has every right to shoot first then ask questions. Shocked

On the times I've requested permission to hunt a persons property I've never really had any problems.  Then again everyones situation is different.

I have never hunted in a yard...but larger property owners rarely say no...but it is allways best to ask first.  I allways stop by a day or two before I want to hunt a area and talk to the landowner about what I plan.

That's the thing.  A lot of property owners really don't mind if you are on the property so long as you ask permission first.
