Go Up Go Down

Hi everyone,
I'm totaly new to metal detecting, so I don't know if this is a stupid question or not.
I just got a Ace 350 as a gift and the ground is still frozen here in Vt., so I can't
really dig for stuff yet. So, the question is: is it possible to find coins hidden in
stone walls. We have many miles of them around here, and I think folks would
have hidden things in them. (think north corner, 4th rock east, etc.) How would
one use a metal detector in that situation?
Thanks. Cnick

Not sure what kind of stone wall you are refereeing to. walls around a pasture or walls that are part of a house or barn? Either way it will depend on the age and construction of the wall.  Give us a little more info and we can help you out.

I'm talking about stone walls around a pasture. The farm I live on has about 2 miles of them.
This farm and the main house date back to 1775, so the walls are from that date foward.
The walls are about 3-4 feet at the base and 2 feet at the top. Thanks
cnick
I should also say that the walls are laid up dry, no mortar, just stacked.

welcome to TH from Kansas! I ask all the stupid questions here, so no worries. that is quite the challenge you have there! The simple answer is yes, your ace will tell you if there is metal present. With practice, you will be able to pinpoint the location very closely. The harder part of this problem is, if you are truly new to MD, identifying coin/jewelry from steel straps, retaining bolts, nails and other surprises. run lots of tests in the warmth of your home on the discrimination modes using coins, rings, nails, bolts and the ubiquitous beer can till you are pretty sure about the nature of your target. Happy Hunting!

stone wall is rare here, but they do exist. 2 points to stress to the new hunter: 1. Always get permission. 2 Always leave the area as good or better than you found it. laying up dry wall is an art, read a couple of how-to books on it before you start. look...I'm a poet. good fences make good....never mind

Well the good thing is being that old little or no rebar or other metal was used in the building of them. More then one cache has been found in and around them old fences so they are worth your time searching them. The house maybe a gold mine depending on how much remodeling has been done over the years. At the top of this page is a search feature that you can use to find old threads about searching old houses lots of good info here on that subject.

New England stone walls are great for searching. Folks used them to hide valuables all the time. Go for it! maybe you will find an old farmer's stash! I have found some coins but mainly toys hidden for what ever reason.
