Store Bought Prospecting Rock-hounding Gadgets

I got a new 'Harbor Freight' catalog in the mail the other day. This is a low cost tool and equipment vendor. You will not find any high quality items, but for trying something out or experimenting on a tight budget it is a handy resource.
As I looked through it I scrutinized the items with a prospecting, rock hound eye. Many items stood out.

Stay away from the Harbor Freight tumblers if anyone is intersted in tumbling rocks. The quality is poor and they don't last long. Remember the old adage- "You get what you paid for"

Some items look like a good deal.  Others not so much...gotta watch the quality of some of the stuff.

Which tumbler did you have trouble with, did you replace it? I think the Vibrating type gives the best results. Mine is a name brand that I paid about $400 dollars for. I expect it to last longer than me, but a low end one may do just as well for many.

When your junk-en it helps to know a little about how things work. The first thing I do is take it apart and make sure it has been assembled correctly. Also use quality lube and adjust where needed. Folks who are mechanically embarrassed are at the mercy of the repairman or laughable warranties and return policies.

It was a harbor freight vibratory tumbler which they were touting at the time as a rock tumbler. Oh- it tumbled alright but lasted a whole 3 weeks. These things should not even on the market as far as I'm concerned.  Everybody on the  tumbling board knows about these lousy products also. My adage again is- "you get what you pay for". A quality product shouldn't have to be sent back in the first place.
