I refuse to quit my favorite passtime just because there's snow on the ground and it's below freezing!  Success can be had in searching the snowbanks left in the corners of busy parking lots that have been plowed.  As those snowbanks melt, and turn into smaller, dirtier piles of old snow, coins and other metalic goodies that have gotten scooped up along with the snow end up condensed into a nice pile.   Detecting  Folks don't even realize they've dropped something when it lands quietly in the snow.

Anybody have any other wintertime detecting tips?  I'd sure appreciate them!

Question :

Would the cold affect the MDer ?

Would the coil have to be covered with a plastic cover ?

Still new to MDing ,but wouldn't mind doing it in the winter.

It would but only in the tuning circuits and possibly the battery.

It already is in one unless you built it yourself.

Go for it. Just dress warmly and have a cup of hot cocoa when you get home.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

The detector I use is waterproof so snow moisture isn't an issue, but I have seen other people put a clear plastic bag over their detector to keep the coil dry.

Where I live it gets well below freezing, and if it's too cold the batteries won't work.  I wait for a day that is reasonably sunny, and the black housing around the battery compartment stays warm enough.

I don't mind being out in the cold for a little while because I get major "cabin fever" when I'm cooped up inside for too many days!  The only thing I can't deal with are the really windy days because I have trouble swinning the detector and my head phones don't want to stay on my head! Using Hot Hands is a great idea!  I love those for taking to football games!
