Always wear gloves when putting your hand(s) down a hole.  You never know when you will get into a bunch of rusty metal or glass.  I learned this the hard way.

Steve
that is something to keep in mind when out.I have been detecting for two years now without gloves, and have had a few close calls. One being a rusted razor arrow

They can come in quite handy and don't take up much space at all in your gear pouch.

Howdy,  I think all the tips listed are real good. The one I like the best and practise the most is, Slow down and lower the discriminator. By doing that I always find lots of stuff and that is why I'm out there. Cool I've hunted with a few guys that hate digging trash so they pump up the filters on their units and I smoke 'em because of it. One time, my little Tesoro had sniffed out a nice silver sound about 3 1/2 or 4 inches deep. I called my buddy over so he could run his coil over the spot to see what he got with his $600 plus machine. You guessed it. With the discriminators set the way he had them, we heard nothing. He would never have found that dime, probably because it was at an angle in the ground, unless it was sitting on the surface. Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Wink

Detectin' Formula: Less filter & less speed= success

Keep swingin'

LarryB, the newbie

I was told that you need to use your detector in the field a hundred times before you will start to be expert with it. I think it was good advice, and true.

This is true.  You need to know your machine to maximize your cpabilities with it.
