Martin,

I use an ames tool from Lowes or Ace hardware is is a 6 in one tool and holds up just as good as the high dollar knives and diggers you can purchase on line. It sells for about 8.00 and is excellent. Check it out before spending alot.

With the Ames that Master Chief is talking about and a small pick or folding pick/shovel, you should be fine for anything in any soil ---- unless it's deep enough that you want to break out the garden shovel (or larger).   You can consider the Ames "the poor man's Lesche".

I too, recently purchased the Ames 7-in-1 planters buddy from Lowes, $12.98, it is stainless steel, with a 6 inch long blade with measurements marked on the blade, a serrated edge on one side that rips through just about anything, a very sharp straight blade on the other edge that cuts sod like butter, the only draw back to this tool, is the front is forked, to be used as a weed puller, and that makes stabbing the earth a little hard, but a little file work on the inside edges of the fok and it is now shap enought to cut roots, and you can pry those stubborn plugs and rocks out, with out worrying about breaking or bending the blade ,its a tough tool. I highly recommend it.

Ahhh, AU, something seems to be missing here  (unless of course you don't use a digger   Grin  )

never mind.....looks like you added the link while I was responding.    That's a good looking digger.   The one thing I don't like about the pick type is you don't have as much control as you do with an Ames/Lesche type.   But sometimes you need the extra force the torque provides.

The total lenth is 17" and the head is 9" and the blade on the back is 2"
it is very well balanced, strong and i feels as light as a claw hammer if not lighter
and the blade is made of Iron, I carry it in a hammer hook on a belt, and it will
dig up most things including old road surfaces and such, next to my machine
its my favorite piece of kit

That is known as a pick-mattock and is available at most garden shops and hardware stores in a variety of sizes.
