The weather here is just perfect for detecting "for now" snow could arrive any day now, so we were at one of our 1812 sites and found a bunch of items, the most exciting was a US shako Plate 16 th Reg it nearly ended up in the scrap lead pail as I had found some pieces and it did look like a piece, when I got it home and cleaned it up I could see some words on the edge so very carefully I unrolled it and you can see the result .....also a few musket balls and two buttons one a really good artillery button.....HH....Johnnn ..

It is a 1812 US Infantry shako plate a very nice find, cant imagine why it was rolled up like that ......HH........Johnnn

A shako was the tall head gear for military uniforms of the period (many high school and college marching bands still wear shakos).  Many shako included a plume in a dition to the plate which was a decorative insignia much like the insignia you wore on your class A cover when you were in the air force.
