My neighbor found an 1861 $100,000 Confederate bearer bond in an old house he was cleaning out. Does anyone have any idea of how much if anything this bill may be worth? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. I have enclosed a copy of the front and reverse.

Just for the history it'self that's a wonderful find! Go check eBay - they may have those on there, if not - possibly completed listings as well.

Thanks, I checked Ebay this morning and there wasn't anything like it. I read a story about a guy who left one on a copy machine and paid $25,000 to get it back.  Appreciate the input. Happy Hunting

Can you scan it again and show the entire border please? It looks like a facsimile of a note than never really existed. On the border, just under the back side near the bottom left you may see the word Facsimile printed. The image you show has trimmed off that part.

They used to sell them in the Civil War battle site souvenir shops. The printing style is not authentic to the real Civil War notes. I have shoe boxes full of them. And a few facsimiles.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi, you had told the last poster to check Ebay, I did to no avail.  My dad has two Bearer Bonds and would like to know how much they are worth for his collection.  They are $30 Bond date 1888 #4750, and the other is dated 1866 #1163.
Thank you for any help you can give.

Greetings,

From what I can see it looks to be a copy from the style of printing used on the document. If my history is correct I believe that even back then all money and bonds were printed in the same way that things are printed today using intaglio printing which uses a very ornate hand engraved plate that the ink is spread over than removed leaving ink only in the areas that were removed by the engraver. Then the die is press onto the paper using great force leaving the ink behind and noticeable texture to the paper from when the paper was pressed onto the die. Just run you fingers across a new dollar and you'll now what I was talking about. They didn't have the same printing processes that we have today so something like that would have been hand engraved and all type would have been either engraved on the same die or a second printing of the document using hand layed out blocks of letters to for the lettering for that document. This is unlike today's process where the item to be printed is transferred to a printing plate making a negative relief that is then ink is spread on the plate and then the plate transfers the ink to the paper. I own a few pieces of real money from the American Civil War and you can definitely tell that intaglio printing was used to make the document.
It is hard for me to tell from a 85k file viewed of off the internet and I am no expert on the subject so please take it to someone who is to verify what you have. I am just trying to help.
Respectively
Phillee

no way i have that same thing as well, and have been trying to figure out what its worth for about 2 years. i traded this homeless guy $10s for this small box with a whole bunch of old coins and bonds. If you ever found out about whats your bond is worth and where you took it i would be thankful to know its worth anything and who would pay something for that.
