My best day out yet. Hit 2 parks that my buddy and I  have been going to about once a month by myself. It was kind of warm with periods of overcast. Was out for 8, but detected for only 6. Broke my old record of $9.50. 18 quarters, 55 dimes, 1 Sackajewea dollar coin, 3 wheaties and a canadian penny.  Plus another 61 good pennies I  gave to my buddy because he couldn't make it.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

Well below minimum wage, mate. You should sue your Parks Department for that.  Grin

Now the real issue here is, how do you clean the modern stuff so it looks that good?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I  use a tumbler with white vinegar and tumble for 12 hours, replace dirty vinegar, tumble for 6 to 10 hours more, then touch up with brass bristle brush. They look like new coins when I am done. I will take a picture when I  am done of my already finished coins.

Thanks Homie for that compliment.

Here is a pix of some of the quarters (308) plus a Kennedy half and a Grant dollar that I have cleaned using the process that I explained to GD.

If you add some salt to the vinegar it will speed up the process very much.
I usually just tumble for about 45 minutes at the most. There might be some gray residue on the coins, but then I just tumble them in dish washing detergent and water for about an hour to make them look shiny.

That's quite a haul of coins you found there.
Cleaning them is easy with vinegar and salt solution.
Glad to see more detectorists getting out to dig em up before progress covers the coins up with asphalt.

They look very clean.
I don't know how I ever survived without a tumbler.
Now I have 4 since I got the new one.
I have to get out to dig up some more coins.

Thanks for the compliments. I have tried salt before, even though it does increase cleaning time I was not satisfied with the results. Dish soap afterwards still did not make them shiny enough. What  really did work was the burnishing with a brass brush. But as long as you are pleased with your results, you should stick with it. The main thing is being able to get out and get them coins in the first place. Happy Hunting.

Whatever works for you is the best way to clean them.
I had some problems yesterday since a penny sneaked into the tumbler when I tumbled the clad.
I had to tumble them again with vin/salt for about 20 miniutes to take the pink out of them.
 Keep on digging them up.
