Not sure what they use on the Clad Pennies but it's NOT pure Copper.  Not even the same color.  They sure Go Fizzy in salt water.  Or the Alkalye  Grounds around here.

I believe it has a zinc core with a copper cladding.. 5% is copper and the rest is zinc. -
-
Zinc corrodes quicly in acidic or akaline soils or solutions. Vinegar is a 5% solution of citric acid and water. Same acid as in fruits. As long as the copper is not damaged, the pennies will shine up in vinegar. if the pennies made after June 1982 have a scratch. nick or chip they will fizz and turn black with an oxide as well as any other metals mixed in. Zinc is hard to remove from nickel.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

I have a silver necklace that likes to tarnish quite heavily. One tablespoon dishwashing liquid one tablespoon bicarb and one of salt dissolve the lot in a cup of hot water better Han any commercial solutions I've found

Glad that works for you Gozzo. For my silver and gold jewelry I have a liquid jewelry cleaner I use. It's fast. 5 seconds it's clean. Just wash thoroughly in a water and baking soda mix, dry . In 2 minutes it's ready to wear. I do prefer gold necklaces because they don't tarnish.
