Go Up Go Down

Scouted out an amusement park here today was active around 1900-1910, well the area was HUGE and frustrated the crap out of me since i don't think i know how to set up this metal detector or understand the knobs even after reading the manual and googling to figure it out.  My detector was going crazy all over the place and dug trash and sometimes found nothing, i am still not sure if it was the sandy/clay in the area or just lots of trash.  Went to another area beeped around a ton and detector still going crazy, digging a lot of pure junk, ie old broken leveler about 2' long, pipes, cans, lots of tabs and tops. Calling it a day and walking back to the car, me and my friend both frustrated, i got a solid hit, i was like oh well gonna dig it, bingo a modern dime, sad that i was sooo happy over a normal 1996 dime, nearby, 2000 penny, then some really old lid to some jar, friend has it to clean it up and look, friend decided to seperate off to find stuff too, next hole i dug was a Gold Ring with 6 small diamonds in the face =) Thus i ended my day on a high note lol, will go back there again sometime.

Tesoro Cibola, Just don't really understand all the knobs and book didn't help, I ended up turning discrimination to MAX today and it would weed out crap and still hit coins and that ring, but if i turn it to MIN it just goes crazy beeping on everything, even 3/4 the way turned to MAX it still goes nuts, not really understanding.

Not so, I would say any nice ring is a good find.  Well done.

Twiasp, that is a beautiful ring!  Much nicer than any of the gold rings I have found in the 40+ years I've been searching.  Way to go!           Detecting

This will keep you from finding 10 rings a day instead of just the 1. I applaud your find but your discrimination setting will be eliminating more of the good stuff than you can imagine. What you need to do is fine tune your digging technique so that digging all the trash out isn't taking too much time.

The truth is that people drop things. Some of what they drop is metal. Only a small amount is precious metal or coin. Thus, we who have buckets full of rings dig every bit of trash and then go back again and go over the same, now clean, area and find the deeper, older coins worth lots of money and the jewelry lost 100 years ago. Don't cheat yourself out of the goodies or convince yourself that your detector is finding all you can find in the discrimination mode. Have fun for a while but go back on that site and dig up all the trash in your way. You won't regret it. I promise you.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Wow gold on your second day out. Congrats,  welcome to the wide world of trash in the ground. Yes there is tons of great stuff, but there is ten times as much trash. Yesterday I dug for three hours and ended up with 2 gallons of trash and 1.60 in clad and one plated hoop earing. But I am still digging beavertails so there is still potential for more gold. Just carry around a bucket to put your trash in so you dont have to dig it up again.

Update on the gold ring, turns out they were CZ's not diamonds, but the gold was real, sold the ring before the weekend for 100 bucks, think it was 4.2 grams of 10k. Gave half the money to the friend beeping around with me that day, told him it was only fair that he gets half since we were working together.  I plan on digging this site more and played around with the detector some, think my threshold was way too high is why i was picking up so much and turning up my discrimination to compensate, anyways fixed that issue, even used that ring before selling to figure out where it discriminates out, and now i have a decent baseline to be under to not eliminate gold rings. On a side note, i don't mind digging the pulltabs since my friends niece saves them for school to turn in for something, so needless to say she will have a ton to turn in when that time of the year comes around.
