Go Up Go Down

We had a very hot spring weekend here with the temperature soaring to 36.9C on Saturday. The beaches were all crowded and I went out on Monday before first light. I started at 4:00am and quit at 2:00pm.

The finds were as follows:

$102.55 in modern coinage.
6 foreign coins
5 rings - 2 gold, 3 silver
1 ring, unknown metal
1 silver ID bracelet
1 gold child's bracelet

I didn't have the heart to count all the bottle tops, pull tabs and junk finds.
Photos will follow tomorrow. I have way too much to do at the moment but I did want to let you know one other thing. I met two detectorists today. One will probably be joining the forums here. The other knows way too much to need any advice.

When I saw the first guy (older than me), he was holding his coil a good 12" off the sand swinging it like he was cutting grass. He was bringing the coil to nearly shoulder height and back again to shoulder height on the other side. Every now and again he'd stop, kick the sand, stare at a spot and move on. He was working the beach faster than a macho jogger chasing a pony tail. As he was leaving, I chatted with him and asked, as you do, if he did all right. He said he found 40 cents! He found one 20c piece and two 10c pieces! By that time I had more than $40.00 and 3 rings but I told him "I had a few" when he asked. He was using a Minelab Sovereign with a 10" DD coil but all that horsepower did him no good at all. I had to bite my lip not to shake him and tell him his technique really stunk.

The other fellow, swinging his Ace250 at a reasonable pace, was doing very well but had his discriminate set to eliminate bottle tops and some other things. I think he may have done better had he searched in all metal mode. I'm sure he'll consider it after signing up here at Thunting.

Well done GD you did the right thing, helping others out and showing them some of the mistakes they are making is a good thing sometimes its the only way to learn as well. Lets face it we all had to learn sometime.  Well done on your days finds it sounds like you had a lot of fun and a rewarding day too.  Grin

Thanks guys!

No power nap for this guy. I got home, took the dog out for a 2 hour bush walk and came back, showered, shaved and got back in the car for a meeting. Didn't get to bed until 10:00pm.

Pictures in a little while. I lost a dear friend yesterday and didn't find out about it until this morning. Must go and attend to that by visiting the family and so forth. Life as an old guy is like that. Friends drop off on a regular basis making you wonder about how close it is to your own time.

As promised, here is a photo of the coins and the silver jewelry. The gold has to be turned in to the police where it is matched against loss reports. There is one gold bracelet there but the intrinsic value is below the amount required and the police refused it. The coins are layered in my coin bucket but they are deep having a face value of $102.55.

When I counted the silver rings, I had 4, not 3 and the largest ring is the one of an unknown metal.
