Thanks, Mike. He was overdue, having battled cancer successfully for 8 years but still a great loss in my life. Cry

I can estimate about $1000.00 or so in coins over a summer. Winter is a big bust beach wise but the tot lots take over and I do about as much again from them.

Thanks everyone.

Homefire, the police hold them for 6 months and return them to the finder as long as it is legal to do so and only if you have requested that it be returned to you. There are always a few items in the pipeline. The law considers it "theft by discovery" if you keep a found item without going through the process. It works. They also will act as intermediaries if you want them to witness and record the return of an item of value.

Thats kinda messed up.

Do you ever get any of it back?

I see all kinds of room for corruption on this one.

they have a similar system in the UK where your supposed to hand finds into the police if no-one collects it in 90 days you can claim it or as is many cases the cops auction it off.

I get most of it back. The occasional item is returned to the owner and that always makes me feel good. I try to find the owners first, of course, but the police have other resources like reports of it being lost and etc.

As to corruption, that is the very reason I never post pictures of finds that have gone to the police. I trust the police not to risk losing their career over a ring but the picture here could be the means for a local from this area to be able to describe a ring perfectly and pick it up as if they were the owner. Don't laugh. It's happened before.
