Last time I found a box like that, the bottom was out of it. I dug through the soil left in the hole and found a kitten skeleton. I put it back where I found it........

At least you have a good box for your own treasure..... still looks in good order to what I can see  Grin Maybe it did have a pet bird or something in it at one time, but not being airtight, it rotted to nothing  Great

I would suspect you dug up the grave site of cremated pet. The water would have washed away the ashes long ago leaving only the container...

I buried my dog the same way near a clump of tree's he always like to sniff and pee on .....

I imagine someone might find him there a time from now and wonder what the box was..... Embarrassed

Cool find It use to be common for cache hunters to rebury the jar, box or Huh?Huh?Huh??  sometimes with a note for the next hunter. Back in the 80's I dug up a fruit jar in Anderson Tx  with a note signed by a well known treasure hunter. Maybe there was a note inside at one time.

I've always considered leaving a note as the mark of class.   It shows the hunter that came in "second" that their research was good even if their timing was lousy.  Smiley   If I've spent a lot of time researching a possible cache (as opposed to randomly looking) I appreciate knowing the problem wasn't my research.

Nice idea BA I will have to remember to take a pencil and paper with me when I go out hunting next.
