Go Up Go Down

This is my first posted find  Shocked

Recently whilst landscaping my garden I dug this little lead figurine up.

This was totally unexpected as i had already gone all over the area with my metal detector, in all metal mode, and it was not detected Huh?. This was at only 4-6" down.

It seems to be that of a Scottish rifleman .. i have been trying to research it  and only came up with picture 3 (circled the figure which i believe it to be).

Can anyone else possibly supply any more info about this figurine.

Also i'm wonderin what the best thing to clean it with would be (so far i've just used clean water) but i don't wan to damage the paint left on it.

The head on the figurine looks a bit damaged .. I think it has been hit with a lawn mower in the past.

Lord Dracon, you may be correct about it being a Scottish rifleman, but based on the headress/helmet I would suggest you expand your search to include troops of colonial India or possibly of Greece during the time of Byron (although the Greek possibility is a distant third in the list)

Too bad you are located where you are, there are 3 or 4 excellent large collections of toy soldiers in the UK including the National Army Museum

and, yes, wuzneme is correct about checking Irish units also.  We tend to forget some of them wore kilts and marched to their own bagpipes besides.

If none of the museums are convenient, the list at links at this url may help:

[angry]Thanks for the heads up  Cool.. i'll do a little more research to see if i can pinpoint the exact unit .. but i don't think i'm far off with also having its sporran and rifle at the same angles to the picture i found .. but i'll browse those sites to see if i can get a better picture match..    We're looking forward to reading what you find out about the piece.
No matter what it turns out to be, it is an exciting find and we appreciate your sharing it with us.   Chances are you are right.  It is most likely either a Scottish or Irish regiment.   We're just suggesting other possibilities based on the picture which is rarely as compelling as actually holding the object in your hand.

Congratulations on the find.

BA posted just as I was sending this to you.

You'll probably find the same angle for many of the soldiers as it's kind of common in them days. But having said that I wanted to tell you that I think that you have a nice find (wanted to say that last time) I wonder why you did not detect it though? are your setting wrong? Did you play around with different metals to see where your settings are? Not that I doubt your ability to use your detector just wondering why

Yes, i'm really confused about that too.. the detector has no problems detecting iron and alu pull tabs.. but when it comes to silver, gold, lead and coins.. it seems to be overlooking them .. i'm getting confused  Undecided  .. gonna try to do some air tests with it, to see what it likes and what it doesn't .. (this might explain why i'm never finding any good stuff when i get to the beach and other sites) ..

I too did start to wonder whether it was me  Grin Grin ..

I did an air test the other day and it detected a coin ok (ish) 3-4" .. but as soon as i put the coins on the ground guess what they vanished as far as the detector goes  Cry

Do you have any ideas as to what might be going on? possibly the ground balance? or some setting i've not set correctly? i've adjusted the sensitivity, ground balance and discrimination settings but still no difference .. also i just realized that the machine tends to "wander" allot and i have to hit the reset frequently (i.e. the needle tends to head up and the pitch changes slowly).. i'll pop out and get some new batteries (the ones in it are fairly new as it is) .. i don't know if that will help but its worth a try  Smiley

As to the lead figurine it seems most likely to be one of the highland regiments (found several sites with similar lead soldiers .. but not an exact copy with the same stance. The one i had found earlier turns out to be smaller than the one i dug up) .. yet i did find another similar picture but i could not find any info on it as it was a picture only .. pre WW1.

I'll have a look to see if there are any other places nearer me who might be able to tell me more about it .. i think there is an old fellow who collects these types of things at a local model shop.. i might pop in to give him a visit tomorrow (if i get time)

Hi mate

Well I'm not qualified to tell you how to set up your machine as all the machines that I use are home brew. But there are a lot of our members like GD and BA and  Homefire that are by far more qualified than me to tell you what to do. I think that you should converse with them (I'll learn a thing or two to)  and that could make a huge difference to your finds.
Hope that this will help you mate
