Yeah it looks like an old Sharps from the US civil war era, but they did not use copper back then so it is most likely a 450/557 Nitro Express.

They were invented by John Rigby in 1898 and were used for hunting Elephants, To this day I have only met one bloke who Owned and Fired one of those beasts with full loads, they are not a long range weapon but they have some serious knockdown power, I use to shoot big bore rifles but there is no way would I fire one of those Mutha's, I am not that stupid but many were and lived to regret it, They have to be one of the worst rifles ever made when it comes to recoil.   Angry   Club

The hole is just part of the Hollow Point design aiding the mushrooming effect which serves a couple of purposes, 1) it causes more wound devastation which guarantees  or limits suffering, 2) Upon impact the mushrooming effect slows the bullet to help it "NOT" pass completely through the target, again reducing suffering.

Although the 450NE has a huge impact pressure of over 5000 lb ft they were not very accurate which meant that the hunter was normally within a 100 yards of the target, where 30 to 40 yards was the Norm, The reason for the lack of accuracy is because after the hunter has fired their first ever shot with a 450 they know what to expect as in the huge amount of recoil so they would flinch or pull the shot, The 450NE was primarily a very large Game rifle and was mostly owned by the Gentry and big Game hunters, The Modern day Magnums using bullet weights of less than half the weight of your bullet have much higher impact pressures and can be used at much greater and safer ranges,

The major difference is that yours is a hollow point where the martini has a solid tip.

At 15mm that would be a huge rifle .  like 59 Caliber.

15mm would be like 0.59 caliber.

I'm going with a rather old 20 gauge shot gun slug.

Something like this newer version.

Trouble is that slug has been in the ground for a lot of years and those slugs in that link have only been out 10 years or so if that,  This Bullet sure is a mystery, hopefully we will find an answer.
